The story of Der Tannhauser is a
German medieval myth about Faith. It is about a knight and his
squire who enter a mountain top cave and deep within, discover
the realm of the Faeries. After a while they feel guilt and run
back to the Church for forgiveness. But not even the Pope will
absolve them of their sin. He says "You can no more regain
your Faith than this staff I bear will grow leaves and branches."
Of course, after the knight and
his squire decided that they are doomed, so they might as well
go back to the Paradise under the mountain, the Pope is surprised
by leaves and branches growing out of his staff. He sends messengers,
but they arrive too late.
