9x12" Goatskin parchment, real medieval paints and 23k gold

This page was made using 100% medieval techniques. Below are images of some stages of the painting and gilding.

The first steps involved laying out the columns and drawing the ruling lines. When this was completed and the calligraphy written, only then could the illustration be designed. An adhesive made from hide glue, a red clay called Bole, some honey, and some chalk is carefully painted where the gold is to be laid. When this has dried, it is made sticky by a long moist breath, and then the gold is laid upon it. As the adhesive dries again, it is burnished through the gold with an agate.

Tha colors are first blocked in, and then other tones and hues are laid in with successive layers. Some layers are blended into previous layers. Some areas are painted further than others at this stage, but I generally try to paint from the center outward.
