Goatskin parchment, 23k gold on
14th c. Italian raised gilding recipe, all pigments used are medieval.
No modern equivalents. Pigments include: Woad, azurite, malachite,
minium, vermilion, brazil wood, orpiment, dutch pink, buckthorn
yellow, salt green, verdigris, sap green, iris green, cereuse,
yellow ochre, English ochre, lamp black, vine black, and walnut
black. Ruling guides were pin pricked with a reproduction medieval
bronze stylus, and the ruling was made with a reproduction lead
plummet.
The work was created as a test piece
for the use of a working medieval palette. The idea was to test
reproduction medieval painting techniques and pigments against
an atmosphere present environment without direct sunlight.
The story was written by Randy Asplund,
and based on the medieval perceptions of gryphons as explained
in authentic bestiary books.
