This painting depicts the final chapter in the Beowulf saga. The
old king has learned of a dragon that is ravaging his land, so
he gathers up his vassals and they go to the sea shore to find
the cave of the great beast. Only Beowulf is brave enough to attack,
but even though he cannot be overcome by strength, he falls victim
to the fiery breath and the poisonous claws. Meanwhile one brave
soldier is ashamed, and so he steps forward to join the mortal
combat While the dragon is busy with the great king, Wiglaf strikes
it a death blow.
